Siem Reap

Getting to know Siem Reap

Located in north-west Cambodia near the Tonle Sap Lake, Siem Reap is the capital and popular resort town of Siem Reap Province. The town has become a famous tourist site due its many historic temples and other cultural sites, many of which are UNESCO heritage listed. Angkor Archaeological Park is perhaps one of the most popular attractions in Siem Reap. The temple ruins at the park are some of the most significant in world history, dating back over one thousand years. Ancient temples, significant ruins and stone relics draw millions of visitors annually to Angkor Park while the city itself features historic architecture of its own. While not as old or historically significant as Angkor, the Old French Quarter features colonial structures over a century old. Nearby, Chinese inspired gates and pagodas decorate the city. From the time of French colonial rule in the early 1900’s the city grew to become the tourist site it is today. But while much of the city features modern buildings and trendy hotels and resorts, the city has also maintained its rural charm and local traditions, offering both fantastic cultural and leisure activities. In short, Siem Reap offers a rich and unique holiday experience. The city is easy to explore on foot and the inviting atmosphere will draw you in.

Siem Reap is a fairly small city just a few kilometres wide. The airport is located 6 kilometres north-west of the city while the historic temple district is between 6 to 10 kilometres north. The French Quarter is the main shopping and entertainment district in the city centre and where many of the hotels and local attractions are located. Slip into one of the alleyway markets and enjoy the excellent sights and sounds of this lively city.

Angkor Archaeological Park

Located north of Siem Reap City, the Angkor Archaeological Park holds some of the world’s oldest and most captivating temples and ruins from the Khmer Empire. The park is vast and there are many sights to see, from ancient ruins to stone sculptures. Visitors can explore the park on a guided bus tour or may hire a driver for the day.

Angkor National Museum

High tech exhibits and impressive artefacts all come together here, highlighting the history, art and culture of the Khmer civilisation. Many of the artefacts have come from the nearby Angkor archaeological site, dating back over 1,000 years.

Cultural tours and performances

Siem Reap is known for its traditional dance and there are many cultural performance tours and shows that take place in the city’s theatres and outdoor venues. Take in a show and experience all that Cambodian culture has to offer.

Pub Street and Old Market

Pub Street and the Old Market area are where much of the city’s nightlife and bar and restaurant scene can be found. Depending on what you’re after, Pub Street is the place for live music while Old Market and The Alley generally offer a more intimate atmosphere with a wider selection of restaurants.

Hotels, inns, guesthouses and hostels are spread evenly across the city and the wide selection in price range and amenities makes the task of finding a place to stay fairly easy. Most youth hostels come quite cheap and offer air conditioning and free Wi-Fi although it’s always a good idea to check before hand. Budget and mid-range hotel options are also widely available offering comfortable rooms and reasonable prices. There are many luxury hotels and resorts in the city featuring lush surroundings and tasteful décor. One interesting stand out from an historic perspective is the Grand Hotel d’ Angkor. This impressive hotel was built in the 1920’s during the French Colonial period and offers old world charm and impressive French gardens.
