Miyako (Shimojishima)

Shimojishima is part of the Miyako Islands, in Okinawa Prefecture. Surrounded by clear turquoise waters accentuated by swaying palms, the island is a popular spot for snorkeling, diving and tropical holidays. Since it is prohibited to build on most of Shimojishima and Irabu Island, the natural scenery of the islands has been well preserved. Don’t forget about nearby Miyakojima which is the largest of the three, which is connected to Irabu and Shimoji Islands by a modern, picturesque bridge. Here you will find a diverse range of accommodation and dining options. Make sure to stroll along the pristine beaches or enjoy the amazing view at the Eastern Cape at the most Southeastern point of Miyakojima.

Nakanoshima Beach

Located on the Southwest on the island, Nakanoshima Beach is a natural beach with a rich source of tropical fish and precious coral reefs. It is also a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. Be careful not to touch or harm the coral reefs for wildlife preservation and beware of your own safety as there are no lifeguards on the beach.

Irabu Island (Irabushima)

Next to Shimojishima is Irabu Island, and it could be easily accessed by car from Miyako Island via the Irabu Bridge. In the past, the island is only accessible by ferries, leaving many natural sceneries yet to be explored. Enjoy the spectacular views when you drive pass this 3.5km long bridge across the sea.

Tooriike Pond

Here in Tooriike you could find two ponds connected by an underwater cavern, resembling a pair of eyes viewing from atop. As one of the ponds connects to the sea, divers can reach to the surface of the pond from the sea. Tooriike is recognized as a national scenic attraction and natural monument. Come explore this rare gem of beauty that lies within the mystic blue seawater.

Island Hopping

Shimojishima is part of Miyako Islands and is connected to the nearby islands by bridges. You can easily access to Irabu Island via the new Irabu toll-free bridge for some spectacular views, or cross the Ikema Bridge to discover the wildlife and natural scenery of Ikejima.

Explore beautiful beaches

Spare an afternoon to chill and relax on one of the beautiful beaches under the warm weather. Take in the photogenic view of the waterfront at the Sunayama Beach or go snorkeling and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters to see the beautiful and colorful marine life at Yoshino Beach. Be sure not to miss watching sunset at Maehama Beach, which is considered to be one of the best sandy beaches in Japan.

The Beach by 17 End

The runway extending out into the sea from the Shimoji Island Airport host a famous and instagram worthy beach commonly referred to as “17 End”. The mystical beach is only revealed when tide at low tide. Be ready to be amazed by this natural wonder.

Diving the reefs

The largest group of coral reefs in Japan can be found in Yabiji, the northern part of Miyakojima. During low tide, the reefs can be seen above the water surface and therefore it is also locally known as the “Garden of the Ocean”. Try taking a glass boat tour if you want to view the stunning underwater world in comfort through the boat’s transparent floor.

Eastern Cape Observation Point

This national treasure of scenic beauty is located at the South-eastern part of Miyakojima. During the 2km-long walk to the observation point, you will find breathtaking views of the sea surrounded by limestone cliffs. The lighthouse is also a nice spot to watch sunset or sunrise.

There is a wide variety of accommodation options available to choose from. Besides “minshuku” guest houses which is of low budget, you could also opt for luxury hotels and resorts which feature private infity pools. Large resorts are located along the coastline so you can have the panoramic sea view for your own and enjoy various facilities such as spas and massage, bars or treat you and loved ones to a fine dining experience.

Shimojishima and Miyakojima are well connected by an efficient transportation network. There are several bus routes and rental car companies available at the airport. Taking a taxi to city center costs around 3,500 yen and takes about 25 minutes to.
